Route Map

The Xinjiang Tianshan Gravel Route is one of the most ambitious and complex bikepacking routes in Asia — a 1200km crossing through the Tianshan mountain range from Urumqi to Kashgar that combines extraordinary scenery, extreme altitude, genuine remoteness, and a political context that requires careful advance preparation.

Xinjiang is a politically sensitive region. Foreign visitors require standard Chinese visa documentation, but the security infrastructure in Xinjiang — checkpoints, registration requirements, digital device inspections, and restricted zones — creates a layer of bureaucratic complexity that is not present elsewhere in China. Research current entry requirements carefully before committing to the route. Some sections near the Kyrgyz and Kazakh borders are designated restricted zones and require additional permits that are not always available to foreign nationals.

The Tianshan itself is extraordinary. The range stretches 2500km from China through Kyrgyzstan and into Kazakhstan, and the Chinese section contains some of the most dramatic high-altitude mountain scenery in Asia. The Nalati grasslands, Sayram Lake at 2073m, the Hemu valley in the Altai section, and the approach to Kashgar through the Pamirs are all individually remarkable. Together they form a route that has no equivalent in terms of combined scenery and challenge.

The mountain passes are the crux. Several sections cross passes above 3500m on unpaved roads that are negotiable in good weather but become dangerous in summer storms, which arrive with almost no warning. Snow can occur at altitude in any month. The road surfaces above 3000m are typically compacted gravel or rough dirt, requiring an adventure bike or hardtail rather than a road gravel setup.

Kazakh and Kyrgyz herder communities populate the summer pastures (jailoos) in the high valleys, and their hospitality — fresh sheep's milk, fermented mare's milk, bread baked in the evening — is a genuine part of the experience. Communication is through gesture and patience.

Most riders take 20-25 days. This is not a route to improvise. Prepare the logistics for 3-4 months before departure.
