Route Map
The Sichuan-Tibet route is not a gravel ride. It is an expedition that happens to involve a bicycle. From Chengdu at 500m elevation to Lhasa at 3,650m, the route climbs and descends 29 mountain passes above 4,000m, crosses rivers that have claimed vehicles in living memory, and passes through some of the most politically sensitive territory in the world.
Logistics start before you even get on the bike. Foreign nationals require a Tibet Travel Permit, an Alien Travel Permit, and additional permits for restricted areas near the Tibetan border. These are not obtainable independently — you need a licensed Chinese travel agency. Allow 4-6 weeks for permit processing. The permits also require you to travel with a guide for sections inside the Tibet Autonomous Region, which adds significant cost and planning complexity.
The route itself follows variations of G318, the main Sichuan-Tibet highway, with gravel alternatives that cut through valleys and over passes the highway avoids. The technical difficulty is real — loose rock, stream crossings, surfaces that change character completely in rain — but the bigger challenge is altitude. Riders regularly experience acute mountain sickness on the eastern passes before acclimatizing. Most serious incidents happen in the first two weeks.
Towns like Litang (4,014m), Batang, and Markam provide resupply, but availability varies by season. The food is straightforward: noodles, rice, and whatever the local guesthouse is cooking. Accommodation is available throughout in basic but functional guesthouses. Camping is possible but altitude camping above 4,500m requires experience and the right equipment.
If you are researching this route, allow at least a year for planning. The permit situation changes year to year.
